First EEE Positive Horse Case In New Jersey In 2021
(TRENTON) – A 7-year-old mare in Cumberland County is the first reported case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in New Jersey in 2021. The unvaccinated mare was humanely euthanized on August 19 due to the severity of the disease. There has been no reported animal West Nile Virus (WNV) cases this season in New Jersey. In 2020, EEE was diagnosed in one horse in Atlantic County.
In horses, EEE causes inflammation of the brain tissue with a significantly higher risk of death than infection with the West Nile Virus. A mosquito bite transmits the disease with the virus circulating between birds and mosquitoes. Humans, horses, and other mammals are “dead-end” hosts as they do not develop high levels of virus in their bloodstream and cannot pass the virus on to other biting mosquitoes.
Effective vaccines for EEE are available commercially. The vaccination schedule and timing of administration play a role in the individual susceptibility of clinical disease in each horse. Horse owners should contact their veterinarians if their animals are not up-to-date on their vaccinations against EEE and other preventable diseases.
For more information about EEE and WNV in horses, visit the New Jersey Department of Agriculture web site at:

EEE, like other viral diseases affecting horses’ neurological systems, must be reported to the state veterinarian within 48 hours, and a neurologic disease worksheet must be completed for each case reported. The worksheet is available at the following website and, once completed, can be faxed to the Division.
