I’m excited to be bringing you another installment in my careers in the equine industry series. This week I visited with a Helen Thomas, an author and writer. She has worked with some of the folks at the Equine Science Center on articles for The Horse, an equine magazine. Today we get to take a look into her everyday life. As you might imagine, this ranks among my favorite interviews. I am a writer too, so we have much in common!
It’s June. Do you know what the month of June in New Jersey is? It’s the Month of the Horse! A whole month where you can celebrate me and my four-legged friends. How are you going to celebrate? As you might imagine, I have no shortage of ideas. The folks here at the Equine Science Center say some of these ideas are too extravagant. I think they need to get into the spirit! I see nothing wrong with buying doughnuts every single morning and indulging in some carrot cake every afternoon.
I am excited to be returning to my series on careers in the equine industry. I found an amazing person to interview for this latest update, Helena Harris. She is a podcaster and has worked with the staff at the Equine Science Center during several of her podcast episodes. She’s returning the favor with an interview on what it’s like to be a podcaster. I’m pretty sure this is one of the coolest jobs because Helena gets to talk about horses all the time!
I’m here to report on some exciting research that will be happening at the Equine Science Center. If you’ve been paying attention to our social media, you might be able to guess what it is… That’s right. Our researchers will be studying the interaction between veterans and horses. If you recall, we briefly touched on this subject last November in honor of Veterans Day. Today we’ll be taking a deeper dive into this exciting research project!
It’s that time of year once again! Rutgers Day 2021 is right around the corner. Even though we won’t be able to welcome you to campus, we have been busily preparing for a day filled with fun and educational content. Plan to join us on Saturday, April 24th for the Virtual Rutgers Day!
Achoo! All of this horse hair floating around in the air makes my nose itch. I can feel it twitching as I sit here writing. It feels wonderful to get rid of my thick winter hair coat! I also enjoy the extra time my friends spend grooming me. The shedding of winter hair signals the beginning of spring for me. Spring is not only marked by piles of horse hair. This season also brings fresh green grass (yum!) and a vet visit for my spring vaccinations (yikes!).
If you’re like me, you occasionally need a refresher on things you’ve learned in the past. Well, I was browsing the Equine Science Center’s website the other day and to my horror found I had forgotten what I could find there! I decided my readers might appreciate a brief overview of the Equine Science Center, the resources we can offer you, and opportunities for involvement.
I’m hopeful there are signs of spring in the air! The snow is finally starting to melt. It was fun while it lasted, but I’m ready to start nibbling on some tender green grass shoots. Spring also brings the Junior Breeders Symposium. As you might guess, this year’s event with be virtual. Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 27, 2021 from 9am to noon.
What do my readers think of all this snow that has fallen? It has me kicking up my heels in the morning! In between these bouts of fun, I’ve been doing some serious planning. Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, and I want to give my sweetheart the perfect day. I’ve discovered some fun facts about the horse’s heart along the way. Hearts are, after all, the shape we associate with Valentine’s Day. Of course, I want to share my newfound knowledge with you!
I can’t believe it’s that time of year again, but the Horse Management Seminar is almost upon us! You all know how much I love learning, so this is one of my favorite times of the year. Like everything else the Horse Management Seminar will look a little different this year. While I and everyone else at the Equine Science Center would love to see your smiling faces on campus, we know that’s not possible. We have taken the Horse Management Seminar to a virtual platform! You can watch from the comfort of your very own home. (I might even wear my pajamas to the event. Don’t tell anyone, though!) Now you can join us for three evenings packed with educational content. Go ahead and mark you calendars for February 1st, 8th, and 15th at 6:30-8:30 PM ET.
My first job at Rutgers University was on mounted patrol. I also carried the Scarlet Knight mascot at football games. One day I became famous when I got excited, stepped onto the field and became the only horse in history to receive a penalty in a football game! And I’m curious and mischievous! I love to be outside, so don’t ever leave my stall door open. I love all kinds of food – just about nothing at a picnic is safe. I also don’t like cheese puffs. That cheetah on the bag scares me to death! After 22 years on mounted patrol, I’m proud to be back, working for the Rutgers Equine Science Center and telling everyone what I know.
