Hay Everyone!
Boy, oh boy. I have exciting news for you this week! I’m so stuffed full of horse treats I can barely lift my hooves to get this written. My friends here at the Equine Science Center decided to indulge my sweet tooth and bake some holiday horse treats. This year they created their very own recipes and I had to spend all week taste-testing. It’s exhausting work, but I have good news. I have found the perfect recipe!
You can check out the video below for the scoop on how to make the perfect treat for your horse. Unfortunately, I was so stuffed full of treats I had to get my horsey friends at the Center to take part in the video. Don’t worry, we even have a low sugar recipe for those insulin resistant or overweight horses. Happy baking!
In case you missed it in the video, the full recipes are as follows:
Winter Wonder Treats
1 cup molasses
1 cup old-fashioned oats
1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Preheat oven to 350°F. Combine all dry ingredients. Add molasses and stir until thoroughly mixed. Roll ½-1 inch balls and place on a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake for 25-30 minutes. After cooling for 5-10 minutes, place a peppermint in the top of each treat. Makes 15-20 treats.
Low Sugar Winter Wonder Treats
2 cups ground flax
1 cup unsweetened applesauce
1/3 cup all-natural peanut butter (no sugar added)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Preheat oven to 350°F. Combine dry ingredients. Add applesauce and peanut and stir until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed. Roll ½-1 inch balls and place on a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake for 25-30 minutes. Makes 15-20 treats.
Your horse will thank you, if you take a few moments this holiday season to do some baking. I wish you all a happy holiday season and look forward to seeing you again in 2020!
Until next year!
Your Friend,
Lord Nelson
