Jane Burrows
Special Strides
As a graduate of Georgia State University physical therapy program Jane has been in active practice for 42 years. Raised on a farm in Michigan, she began work with horses under the guidance of her grandfather and his teams of Belgians at the age of two. Recognizing the unique qualities that horses bring to human interactions, she has spent decades learning about them. Combining horses with work in physical therapy provided the framework to explore new areas in biomechanics, sensory integration, and system organization. Along the way she has added to her horse experience with a thorough grounding in barefoot hoof care and natural horsemanship techniques. Jane is currently on staff at Special Strides in Monroe, NJ.

Dr. Jeff Thomason
University of Guelph
Dr. Jeff Thomason has devoted his research career to the study of horse legs and feet. From his early work on fossil equid feet to his current studies of the effects of surfaces, his focus has always been on how the limbs and their anatomical parts–bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints–are loaded during locomotion. An understanding of their biomechanics helps explain the unique anatomical structure of the equid limbs that makes horses both proficient and vulnerable in many forms of movement, from racing at high speed or around obstacles, to the coordinated beauty of dressage. In this context, knowledge of the effects on limb loading of factors such as surface properties is key to improving equine performance while reducing the high frequency of limb injuries. Over the years, Dr. Thomason has shared his evolving understanding of limb anatomy and biomechanics with many international audiences, including student and practicing veterinarians, farriers, equine educators, and other participants in the various horse industries. He enjoys trying to make a challenging subject informative, accessible and even enjoyable, with the aim that everyone in each audience will learn at least one piece of new information that will be to the benefit of any horses in their care.
