Can you believe August is already here? I sure can’t. I’m excited to see the school year kick-off soon. By now you probably know this is one of my favorite times of the year. I get to welcome all the students to campus and make sure they are clear on which treats are my favorite (Doughnuts are always welcome!). This fall will look a bit different than usual, though. Sadly, I will miss the typical bustle and excitement of welcoming students on campus. I’ve come up with the perfect way to live vicariously! Some of my student friends have agreed to do a series of interviews to give you a first-hand look into life as an undergraduate, graduate, and vet student.

Ms. Jennifer Weinert, a Ph.D. candidate in the Endocrinology and Animal Biosciences program at Rutgers University, is my first guest. I know all the folks at the Equine Science Center stay busy, but wow, listening to what a graduate student accomplishes in a day makes me tired. I think I’d better start a little slower if I decide to go back to school.

Go ahead and watch the video of Jen’s interview!

As tiring as it sounds, life as a graduate student also sounds exciting! I sure would like to conduct some research of my own one day. (Hmmm. I’m going to make sure it includes plenty of food for the participants.) As you know, teaching is one of my favorite pastimes. (It might be second to snacking, though.) I would fit right in as a graduate student, if I got to teach like Jen does!

As you’ll continue to hear in coming weeks, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects are important if you’re considering further education in Animal Science or a related field. You can get a jumpstart on building your knowledge base and seeing how much you know about horses! If you were listening closely, you may have heard Jen mention Equine Trivia Tuesdays 4 Kids. Come put your skills to the test! There will even be prizes! (Sadly, I was told we can’t give away doughnuts. I think they might be worried I would eat all the doughnuts before we gave them away.) Register for the remaining trivia sessions at https://go.rutgers.edu/TrviaAug2020.

I’m feeling excited about the start of school already! Make sure you don’t miss out on my next installment in the Back-to-School series. I’ll let you in on a secret. Next time you’ll get to peak inside the life of an undergraduate student!

Until next time!
