RESPONSIBLE HORSE OWNERSHIP A PRIORITY AT THE EQUINE SCIENCE CENTER
Rutgers Equine Science Center Adds New Responsible Horse Ownership Page to Website
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (September 9, 2009) – What do you do when you can no longer adequately care for your horse? Are you looking to purchase a horse? The answers to these and many more horse ownership questions are now available on the new Responsible Horse Ownership page of the Equine Science Center website, an initiative led by Sarah Ralston, associate director for teaching for the Center. The new webpage can be accessed from the Equine Science Center homepage (esc.rutgers.edu).
The Equine Science Center has identified an immediate need to address the concern and consequences of the growing unwanted horse population. “We are making a concerted effort to educate current and potential horse owners about the many responsibilities that are part and parcel of owning a horse,” says Karyn Malinowski, director of the Equine Science Center. “It is imperative that prospective owners are well aware of the long-term commitment and needs of horses in their care.”
The dedicated webpage will include downloadable PDF handouts and web PowerPoint presentations entitled "Responsible Horse Ownership" and "The Economics of Horse Ownership." Visitors to the Responsible Horse Ownership webpage will also find a series of fact sheets related to owning a horse.
The Responsible Horse Ownership webpage also contains information from the American Horse Council’s Unwanted Horse Coalition. To see the page, visit http://www.esc.rutgers.edu/rho/index.htm.
